Politics, reigion and now being in debt are the things not to talk about around the dinner table, or maybe they are! Debt stigma is a topic that seems to be gathering momentum and discussion about what can be done to ease the burden that people carry around impacting their health and wellbeing. This is a good development for the marketplace, and the question about “can family and friends help” has greater scope and meaning than giving money to help pay the bills. It is something that we should add to our signposting that it is ‘good to talk’ with trusted family members and friends and get where possible emotional support at a difficult time and not deal with debt alone or in isolation. I know in our business this conversation already happens sometimes, but maybe it's time for something official to appear next to CAB, Stepchange, Debt Advice line, Shelter and the like?
In fact, even in our turbulent times, Britons find it easier talking politics with their family than they do dealing with money problems (63% vs 53%). The same can be said for religion, with 62percentt of Britons saying they find it easier talking about faith than money. Overall, one in five (19%) say they find it difficult talking about money problems and debt with their family. Furthermore, two-thirds (66%) find it easy talking about personal health with their family. Yet almost half (46%) of younger adults, aged 18-34, have had trouble sleeping thinking about their hidden debt.
